Enameled wire varnish coats copper and aluminum round and flat wires for engines, transformers, generators and electrical measuring instruments. It cures to the wire surface at high temperatures. The primary function of the final coating is electrical insulation. Enameled wire varnish can also be called primary insulation. The coated wire is sometimes called “magnetic wire.”
Wires insulated with enameled wire paint
Enameled wire varnish coats copper and aluminum wires with up to 30 layers, providing electrical insulation and helping to avoid short circuits in the coils. Such wire enamels must also have excellent chemical and high-temperature resistance, must have excellent adhesion to copper or aluminum wires, and must also have excellent mechanical stability.
In some cases, such as those used in motors driven by frequency converters, suitable insulation should be able to resist partial discharges that can cause engine short circuits and malfunctions.
The wires that are coated vary greatly depending on the application. Some wires may be thinner than a human hair, such as watch electronics. But for large motors in wind turbines, the diameter of round or flat wires can reach several millimeters.
Different coating methods should be used for enameled wire varnish according to the shape and diameter of the coated wire. Horizontal or vertical coating, or coating using molds or felts are typical enameled wire coating methods.
Axalta has close relationships with the international magnet wire industry. This enables it to continuously develop new technologies and production processes and adapt its product portfolio to meet changing market requirements. This also means that Axalta has created custom wire enameling solutions for specific motor coatings, helping to improve and optimize operational performance for specific customers.
Enameled wire enamels can be composed of different chemical compositions, including polyurethane, polyester, polyesterimide and polyamideimide. The solid content range is approximately 8% to 60% (1g/1h/180℃), and the viscosity range is between 30 to 60000mPas (25℃).
